BRUNSWICK, Maine — Darien Crago and Daniel Plimpton, two of the lead actors in Maine State Music Theatre’s production of "White Christmas," portray a couple who fall in love and become engaged. Playing the roles did not require a tremendous leap of imagination.
They met 10 years ago while performing in a production of “White Christmas” on Long Island, New York.
"I quickly was very enamored with Darien," Plimpton recalled.
She had a lead role while he was "dancing in the back," as he put it.
"I asked her to be my date to the opening date of that show. She said no," Plimpton explained.
As with most romantic theatre stories, this one does not end with the initial rejection.
"A few weeks later she sort of changed her mind," Plimpton said. "And then we started dating and got married in 2022, and here we are."
"This is our first time revisiting ['White Christmas'] as a married couple," Crago said. "It’s very special."
And what do other members of the cast and crew at Maine State Music Theatre think of this heartwarming tale?
"I think there’s a combination of, ‘That’s so sweet,’ or maybe a groan and an eye roll," Crago said with a laugh. "Because it’s so cheesy," she added.
"White Christmas" runs through Aug. 3 at the Pickard Theatre in Brunswick.
