BURNHAM, Maine — A Burnham man was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Saturday night after crashing his ATV.
Waldo County Sheriff's Deputy Lt. Matthew Curtis said his office responded to a report of the Mount Road area crash at about 6:45 p.m.
When deputies arrived, they found a crash involving a 2016 Yamaha four-wheeler, being driven by Gerald Erving, 48, and a 2019 Can AM, being driven by Erving's son, 20-year-old Zachary Erving – both from Burnham.
Lt. Curtis said deputies' investigation showed Gerald Erving's ATV rear-ended the back tire of his son's ATV, causing him to be ejected over the handlebars and onto the pavement of Mount Road.
Gerald Erving was taken to a hospital in Pittsfield then airlifted to Bangor with life-threatening injuries, Curtis said. His son Zachary was uninjured.
Deputies said neither Gerald Erving or his son were wearing helmets, and speed and alcohol appeared to be contributing factors.
The crash remained under investigation.
Gerald Erving's condition as of Monday was unknown.
Waldo County deputies were assisted by Clinton police, Burnham fire and Sebasticook and Unity rescue.
