Rain or shine | The Cumberland County Fair is ready for an eventful Thursday

Get ready for some big events at the fairgrounds on Thursday. Fair officials said it has been a great week welcoming visitors and promoting local agriculture.

CUMBERLAND, Maine — Since 1869, fairgoers have flocked to the Cumberland Fairgrounds for its annual community tradition, and a little rain won't stop the fun that awaits visitors on Thursday.

Despite a few cancellations and postponements, most scheduled events will still be held throughout the day. However, the fair will not have any stage performances on Thursday. It's recommended to check the fair's Facebook page for the latest updates.

The International Horse Pull returns to the fairgrounds for the first time in 12 years. Mainers will be able to cheer on the local "American" team as they compete against a team from Canada at 6 p.m. Pulling events will also go on as planned throughout the day.

Thursday is the last day of the "All American Rodeo!" where you can watch classic events like bull riding. The rodeo starts at 7 p.m. after the final harness race of the day.

While the fair provides an opportunity for visitors to watch unique events or grab some great food, its mission is to promote local agriculture and the role of farmers. Fair Secretary Liz Tarantino said it's important for the public to know about all the hard work Maine farmers put in to make sure food gets on the table.

Fair President Ted Googins added that it has been great to see younger Mainers continue to get involved in the livestock shows or pig races and hopes the next generation continues to grow the legacy of the fair.

Blake and Graham Cohen are two members of the 4-H Dairy Club and they're getting ready to perform with their cows, Ivey and Squirrel, on Saturday. The Cumberland natives, ages nine and 13, work with their cows every day and participate in events at fairs across the state.

Blake said he likes working with Ivey on their routine and he's excited to show off in front of the judges.

Graham, the older brother, said the 4-H club is a lot of fun and he likes being with his friends at various fairs during the fall, and he also likes educating visitors about his cow and how milk is processed from the farm to the store shelves.

If you can't make it to the fairgrounds on Thursday, here is a list of all the events happening the rest of the week.
