AUGUSTA, Maine — An Augusta apartment complex is a total loss after going up in flames early Saturday morning.
According to the Augusta Fire Department, people were hanging out of windows when firefighters arrived at the complex on Malta Street just after 5 a.m.
Five people were injured, including one person with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Augusta Fire-Rescue said that person jumped from a third floor balcony after re-entering the burning building and becoming trapped. The person was transported to Maine Medical Center.
All occupants reported that smoke detectors alerted them to the fire. Firefighters rescued nine people from the upper floors by using ground ladders.
The American Red Cross of Maine said it is helping 23 people displaced by the fire. That number may increase as they continue to make contact with affected residents.
