SCARBOROUGH, Maine — The Scarborough branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles closed starting Saturday for repairs that are expected to take several weeks to complete.
A roof drain on the branch building broke after a particularly cold day in February 2023, causing water to leak into the office below.
The branch closed in May 2023 for several days for more intensive cleanup and other repairs.
"While there has been no threat to customer or staff health at the branch since the incident, mold remediation is necessary to ensure the branch continues to be a safe and health space for everyone going forward," Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said in a news release prior to the 2023 closure.
The secretary of state's office said Friday the temporary closure was expected to last about four weeks for ongoing work, including further mold remediation to "ensure a continued safe and healthy environment for customers and staff."
The office issued a reminder in the release that several nearby BMV branches remain open for walk-ins and appointments, and AAA Northern New England locations also provide select services. Online services are also available.
A specific date for the branch reopening has not yet been determined.
