SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Market Basket is set to open a fourth Maine location in fall of 2026.
The Downs, a mixed-use development at the former Scarborough Downs location in Scarborough, has announced that Market Basket will be the first retailer at the heart of its town center project.
The developers’ strategy for the town center is to balance national and local businesses using a mix of grocers, everyday service providers, junior retailers, restaurants, and small retailers, according to a press release.
Market Basket currently operates 90 locations across New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine. Other Maine stores are in Westbrook, Biddeford, and Topsham, with the Topsham location opening most recently in June.
"It is very rewarding to start delivering long-awaited amenities that residents and visitors want here in Scarborough," Peter Michaud, managing partner at The Downs, said in the release. "Market Basket is an excellent grocer, and we are confident this marks the beginning of exciting things to come at The Downs."
Developers broke ground on the town center project last fall. When the project is fully finished, developers estimate it will create more than $615 million in new value, $10 million in new tax revenue per year, and as many as 3,000 new jobs.
The Scarborough Market Basket will be located at the corner of Market Street and Scarborough Downs Road, according to the release. The 80,000-square-foot store will offer over 50,000 products at the new location, the release stated.
The Downs development team said it believed the Market Basket’s announcement would stimulate further activity among the other entities that have expressed interest.
