SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Maine is buzzing with anticipation as the doors of the Costco Wholesale store opened Friday morning.
Spanning an impressive 152,000 square feet, the new store is nestled in the vibrant Scarborough Downs development.
Individuals lined up all day Monday, eager to secure their membership at Maine's first-ever Costco.
Among them is Katherine Devine, who expressed her excitement for the new store.
"Costco, oh my goodness. I was in a Costco in Arizona, and I was hooked immediately. When I heard they were coming here in Maine, I was like, 'Are you kidding me?' This is amazing," Devine said.
Despite the excitement, some Mainers remain skeptical, wondering how Costco will fare against other local wholesalers.
Wonda Moors poses the question, "I belong to BJ’s and Sam’s, and I want to know if Costco can compete with them."
However, Henry Reynolds, who has been a member of both Sam's Club and BJ's, is optimistic.
"My wife and I have been members at Sam’s and BJ’s, but when Costco came in, well, we’ve heard a lot of good feedback about the Costco stores," Reynolds said.
Reynolds said that he is securing a discounted membership before the official opening day.
"For an early membership, you get $30 back and then $50, so $80, yeah, that's why I'm here."
The starting cost to join Costco is $60 annually for the Gold Star membership.
Rocco Risbara, manager of The Downs development, highlighted the strategic decision to bring Costco to Scarborough.
"When we first started The Downs, we recognized that because of our location and the desire of what Maine people have, Costco would be a great fit," Risbara said.
Risbara said he envisions Costco as a catalyst for supporting other businesses in the area, with mixed-use buildings approved for retail, office space, and residential use.
Costco in Scarborough aims to be more than just a grocery store for bulk items. In addition to its vast selection, the store will house a tire center, pharmacy, and gas station, providing a comprehensive shopping experience for its members.
The doors of the much-anticipated Costco in Scarborough opened 8 a.m. Friday.
