FREEPORT, Maine — With the National Retail Federation estimating more than 188 million people planning to participate in Black Friday shopping, Maine is no different with thousands heading to stores for a great Friday deal.
Outlet stores at the Freeport Village Station, home of L.L. Bean's flagship store, has become a popular destination for some when it comes to finding holiday sales.
"Well my mom and I traditionally come every Black Friday; we shop till we drop!" said Erin Witham of Windham, who had just arrived early Friday morning.
Although past years have involved early rope drops and competitive shoppers, the folks NEWS CENTER Maine spoke with said they're enjoying a stress-free experience this year.
"It has changed a lot, like before my mom and I would get up at the crack of dawn and come out [Black Friday shopping.] But now we get breakfast [and] we're just getting here... it's like 10:30," Witham added.
Even out of state shoppers have traveled to Freeport for the low-key atmosphere this year. One shopper from New York said they've made the trip an annual Thanksgiving tradition.
Despite the shift in tone, that hasn't stopped stores from bringing in deals.
Ready to bring in stock for the holidays, manager Jane Redlon of Crystal Joys said their store has had its biggest Black Friday deals yet.
"We did have a line outside for our neighbors, and so a lot of people popped in while they were waiting," Redlon said. "You know [shoppers] love the stocking stuffers in here, these little gem stone bottles and keychains and things like that. Although we have had some big ticket items go already."
