CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — Popular pick-your-own strawberry spot Maxwell's Farm in Cape Elizabeth says it has decided to close after more than five decades in operation.
Maxwell's Farm posted on social media Sunday announcing 2024 will be the strawberry farm's final season after 51 years, citing "no single reason" for its closure, but a "myriad of realities" that had built over time.
"After years of painstaking consideration and attempts to adapt to the challenges of farming in the current landscape, we have come to the very hard decision to close Maxwell’s Farm," the business said on social media.
Maxwell's Farm announced an early closure to its 2024 season on June 27 due to fruit flies. Their decision to close permanently, however, was not solely influenced by the abrupt closure two weeks after opening, the business reassured.
