YORK, Maine — One holiday market in southern Maine shined a light on some of the hardworking small businesses across the state.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are about 150,000 small businesses in Maine. What better time to shop locally than during the holidays?
The sixth annual Holiday Makers Market showcased more than 25 small businesses Sunday at Cliff House Maine in partnership with Makers of the USA and Meet York County.
“It’s very important that you get to see the craft and meet the makers behind it because that’s what makes the product so essential to your holiday needs and gifting," Kristan Vermeulen, Makers of the USA founder, said. "It makes it memorable. You create memories when you buy these products."
The holiday market supports local creators during the busy shopping season, urging people to shop local. It's also a way to give these businesses more exposure.
"What I love the most about it is that I get to meet people that shop with us online in person," Samantha Masabny, owner of The Woods Maine, said. "The creativity in this place is unbelievable."
Vermeulen said she grew up in a small town where she realized how essential it is to share the stories behind small businesses and the handmade products crafted right here in Maine. Business owners said they appreciate events like this because it's a way to network with other businesses, reach a new customer base, and see the true appreciation for handmade products.
"It’s really refreshing to have people who appreciate a handmade item," Heather Kelly, owner of Nail It Art, said. "We need the help. It's an alternative lifestyle and supporting us means a whole lot."
