Onsemi announces closure of South Portland site

An Onsemi spokesperson shared a statement the company is consolidating sites and offering impacted employees opportunities to relocate "where possible."

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Onsemi has confirmed it is closing its site in South Portland and laying off employees. 

The semi-conductor company creates power and sensing technologies, and has more than 30,000 employees worldwide, according to its website. Its South Portland corporate campus is located off Running Hill Road, near Target. 

An Onsemi spokesperson shared a statement with NEWS CENTER Maine the company is consolidating sites and offering impacted employees opportunities to relocate "where possible." 

"As part of our ongoing efforts to optimize our global footprint, onsemi is further consolidating sites into Centers of Excellence. The closure of the South Portland, Maine site is a difficult step to enhance the company’s ability to innovate and collaborate, and to increase organizational efficiencies to position the company for future growth," the statement reads. 

The company also stated "all employees are eligible to apply for other positions within the company."

It was not indicated how many employees are impacted by the layoffs or whether the closure pertains to corporate or manufacturing positions.
