June's heat wave may benefit some businesses and hurt others

Funtown Splashtown in Saco anticipates heavy foot traffic, while a Cumberland golf center expects the opposite.

MAINE, USA — With temperatures already getting into the 90s in parts of Maine, some businesses are planning for an influx of people looking for outdoor activities. Meanwhile, others are anticipating business to slow down.

"With these nice warm temperatures, it usually means July and August are going to be hot so we're excited to see some people," Funtown Splashtown USA General Manager, Cory Hutchinson said.

Summer weather is here and water parks like Funtown Splashtown USA in Saco seem to be a popular place to cool off.

"We're going to be busy anytime that it's hot," Hutchinson said. "You have upper 80s into 90s, the water park is going to be really really busy. People are going to want to cool down. They want to refresh."

If you do decide to hit the waterpark this week, don't forget to take care of yourself in the heat.

"Have you're water and wear you're sunscreen and get in the water to cool your body temperature down," Hutchinson noted.

While people flock to the water to cool off, some might think it's a little too hot for other outdoor activities like golf.

"We tend to see less people come out, in fact, we always say heat keeps them away like rain only they are much more likely to hit balls in the rain than they are in the heat," Paddy Badcock, who runs the Golf Learning Center & Paddy's Pro shop in Cumberland, said.

Fewer people teeing up is not a familiar sight for Badcock.

"Normally this place is packed, we had a guy yesterday who asked if we had alternative parking so this is very unusual for this time of year," Badcock said.

There could even be fewer people sticking to their lesson plans.

"I teach 4 or 5 lessons a day, 6 days a week and I'm expecting maybe one or two cancellations this week because of the heat," Badcock explained.

Badcock said he anticipates more golfers to hit the range next week when temperatures cool off some. Meanwhile, Hutchinson expects a busy week as people look for ways to beat the heat.
