BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College will increase its minimum wage rate for benefits-eligible hourly workers from $15.50 to $17 an hour, the college said in a release Wednesday.
More than 330 additional support staff working at the college will also see a higher paycheck thanks to compensation adjustments.
The higher wages are meant to attract new workers and reward those who have stayed with the college through the pandemic, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration and Treasurer Matt Orlando said in the release.
The wage hike comes 10 months ahead of the schedule for wage increases announced by the college in October 2019, when the minimum wage at Bowdoin was $12.65 an hour and the minimum wage in Maine was $11 an hour, according to the college. Since then, Bowdoin increased its minimum to $14 on July 1, 2020, to $15.50 on July 1, 2021, and was scheduled to move to $17 on July 1, 2022.
