Fetch ME A Home: Lucy Loo loves to be held

Lucy Loo is a cat with special needs, but she doesn't let them slow her down. She's looking for a home with plenty of love.

WINTHROP, Maine — Since 1980, the Protectors of Animal Life Society, or P.A.L.S., in Winthrop has been rescuing cats and kittens from Kennebec County and surrounding communities. They also help take in cats that have either been surrendered or saved by state welfare officers.

Lucy Loo was surrendered by her elderly owner who just couldn't take care of her any longer. It was then the crew at P.A.L.S. discovered that this 11-year-old had untreated diabetes and early kidney disease. Since getting on an insulin treatment and a new prescription diet, Lucy has been thriving.

It's important to know that there is an extra cost per month, about $100 for her insulin and prescription diet.

P.A.L.S. Executive Director Theresa Silsby told us that right now Lucy Loo is on ProZinc, which is about $120/bottle and at 2 units twice a day, one bottle should last four months or so. Her diabetic prescription diet is 1/2 can of wet food twice a day and 1/3 of dry food twice a day, with feedings timed 12 hours apart.

That said, if you're up for a little extra cost, you'll get extra benefit from this 11-year-old girl who still has a lot of life to live and a lot of love to give. She loves being held and snuggled, and will give you all of her happy purrs. She also has plenty of energy left to play and explore with her new family.

In a typical year, P.A.L.S. takes in up to 600 cats and finds new homes for more than 500 of them and Silsby said they don't receive any funds from the cities, towns or state they serve. Relying on adoption fees, grants and fundraisers, they can always use more support.

On July 3, members with P.A.L.S. will be at Fast Eddie's in Winthrop for cruise night, sharing information about their shelter, and collecting support. In August, they'll also be participating in the Winthrop Sidewalk Art Festival, so be sure to stop by and say hello.

They will also have an online auction in the next few weeks, you'll find that here.
