PORTLAND, Maine — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has had an influx lately of smaller animals, with guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, and birds all looking for forever homes.
This week we feature Persephone, who's about 2 months old. Persephone was part of a litter from a pregnant mother who was surrendered to the shelter. Her siblings are also available for adoption.
They've been living in foster care while space opens up at the shelter for them, so they've become used to human touch. Ideally, Persephone is adopted out along with her brother Phoenix, as rabbits are social creatures.
Katie Lisnik with GAHS said rabbits like homes with space to run around freely. While soft and snuggly, they're also very active and can be trained to use a litter box. Lisnik doesn't expect Persephone to grow much larger than she is now, as her mom wasn't that big.
Phoenix has been neutered, but Persephone has not yet been spayed. When you adopt her, GAHS will coordinate a time for her to come back in for that. You can fill out an adoption application on the website.
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is located at 55 Strawberry Avenue in Lewiston. They're closed on Sundays and Wednesdays, and open for adoptions 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
On Sunday, May 19, join GAHS and WIGY 105.5 for Cats & Canines Cornhole happening at Sliders in Lewiston. There will be games, raffle prizes, and camaraderie, whether you're team cat or team canine. Learn more here.
