LEWISTON, Maine — Best guesses on this mix are Husky, Alaskan Malamute, or Great Pyrenees. If you know those breeds at all, you know Alpine's best fit will be with an outdoorsy family. Staff at Greater Androscoggin Humane Society say he's looking for an active home life.
They also say he's not really an apartment kind of fellow, as he loves to be outside. That said, he's a snuggle bug at night and big lover of his people. Looks AND personality? What a catch!
Alpine is a fairly big boy at 78 pounds, and he still has some of that puppy energy to burn. He's somewhere between 1 1/2 to 2 years old. He came to the humane society from Texas, which was such a boring climate for this fluffy pup.
The staff says he does well walking on a leash and knows basic commands like "sit," "lie down," and "paw." He's also food motivated, which will make him easy to train in the future with some of his favorite treats.
Alpine has been in foster care with other dogs. While he gets along well with them, it's best he meets any siblings before an adoption. As for cats, he might be a little too energetic for a home with them. And he does love kids, but he's a big guy, so ideally a good home fit would be with children older than 8 years old, the Humane Society says. He won't mean to, but with his size and big fluffy tail, he'd easily knock someone smaller over.
After a nice big walk or hike, he will gladly curl up with you for a snuggle, and as I quickly learned he'll do anything for a good belly rub.
