MONTVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Runner sleds are made of wood and steel. They are best used on surfaces with hard packed snow such as sleighs would run on.

In Montville, a group calling itself "The New England Runner Sled Association" encourages the use of these old sleds, which were widely sold up through the 1960's.

G. W. Martin is the driving force behind the association. He helps keep roads on Hogback Mountain plowed so people can have "free" fun if they own a sled.

"We gotta keep some value in these sleds," Martin told NEWS CENTER. "A lot of them are just hanging around the barn. People got get them out and clean them up. They're a lot of fun. They really are."

Each year, the association runs what it calls The New England Runner Sled Championships in order to determine who is "The Fastest Runner Sledder in All the Land."

In this year's championship, Cary Merrifield beat two-time winner Brian Trahan in the final.
