MAINE, USA — It's all about apples as Gardening with Gutner learns how to grow the perfect apple, cook a rustic apple tart, and drink a smooth hard apple cider.
Limerick is home to one of America's favorite apple orchards. Libby & Son UPicks was voted the best by USAToday. Todd learned from owner Aaron Libby the basics of growing apples. Libby showed Todd a new way to grow apples that many orchards are switching to and explained what you need to do before you plant your first apple tree.
Next, Gardening with Gutner traveled to Orr's Island and the historic Salt Cod Café, where owner Alison Prince rolled out the pie dough to make beautiful rustic apple tarts. Todd regularly vacations to the area and frequently visits the café, where he has tasted Alison's wonderful fruit pies.
Lastly, the Portersfield Cider House in Pownal served up distinctive hard ciders. The owner, David Buchanan, forages for the apples around Maine, which makes these ciders one of a kind. No two batches are alike. David walked Todd through tasting each unique cider.
Apples may be a humble fruit, but their versatility is what makes them amazing.
