Westbrook holds its first Hanukkah celebration with menorah lighting

Westbrook Mayor Michael Foley said the menorah will be part of the city's annual light display for years to come.

WESTBROOK, Maine — The city of Westbrook held its first ever Hanukkah celebration in partnership with Chabad of Maine. About 50 people gathered at Westbrook Common for a ceremony and public menorah lighting.

This celebration comes weeks after the city sparked controversy after removing the Star of David from its Hanukkah light displays after members of the Arab American Community said they found it offensive as the Israel-Hamas war continues.

Westbrook Mayor Michael Foley said Sunday night's celebration was years in the making and the menorah will be part of the city's annual light display for years to come.

"It’s awesome to be able to show our Jewish friends and neighbors the support that they need in these trying times that we’re experiencing and that here in Westbrook we stand with them, and we're able to have this menorah display," Foley said.

This celebration is just one of many across the state as Mainers are celebrating the eight-day Jewish holiday.

"The community of Westbrook has set out to be inclusive with everyone. We have a welcoming community with so many different people from nationalities, religions living in the community, and this is just one example of the many efforts that we do to help ensure that people in the community feel welcome," Foley said.
