In honor of the Fourth of July, check out the largest firework ever detonated in North America.

At more than 1,175 pounds, it may be the heaviest ever set off in the world.

The 48-inch shell was launched on February 6 as part of Steamboat's Winter Carnival.

It was custom-built by firework enthusiast Tim Borden, who has been building and donating fireworks to the carnival for years. His licensed manufacturing facility, which he runs out of a shed on his ranch, has produced other large shells in years' past.

But nothing quite to this scale.

Borden used 58-pounds of high explosives to set the firework off from a mortar buried deep in Emerald Mountain.
