Community celebrates 2 decades of tradition with Rockland’s Festival of Lights

It’s the 20th anniversary of the "Lobster Trap Christmas Tree Lighting," kicking off holiday activities for all.

Santa Claus made quite the entrance in Rockland on Friday afternoon, as he cruised in on a snazzy boat, to be greeted by dozens of excited parents and children.

Rockland has plenty of traditions, but it isn't officially the holidays until Rockland’s annual Festival of Lights commences.

Lighting a tree made entirely of lobster traps has been a Rockland tradition for two decades. Marking its 20th anniversary this year, once those lights go on, a long list of weekend holiday activities can begin.

"It means so much to the community because it's something that brings everyone together. It's a way that we stay connected and especially coming off of a few years of the pandemic [it's] bigger [and] better than ever before" David Gogel, executive director of Rockland Main Street, said.
