STANDISH, Maine — While some people might spend the day before Thanksgiving buying last-minute supplies, one restaurant in Standish spent the day preparing meals for others.

The kitchen at Carr's Family Restaurant was bustling Wednesday with people working hard to make sure people in several communities have a Thanksgiving meal.

"We're doing a Thanksgiving dinner for people who are less fortunate and alone for Thanksgiving," Dan Carr, owner of the family restaurant, said.

This is the third year Carr and his partner, Amiee Esty, have cooked up free meals. This year's menu featured turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and cookies.

Meals over the last two years were dished out of their other eatery, Dan's, which is just down the street from the family restaurant.

This year, however, Carr said they saw the largest number of meal requests yet. "Last year we did a little over 50, and this year we're doing 150," Carr said.

Volunteers and staff joined in to help cook, pack, and even deliver meals.

"We have people that come here and actually deliver the food to people who can't get out, who don't have means and ways of getting someplace else," Esty said.

With Thanksgiving being a holiday of gratitude, offering a meal to those who might not otherwise have one is something Carr is more than happy to do.

"It's important to give back to the community," Carr said. "That's our big drive, people have been great about supporting us and just want to return the favor."
