Why sales aren't the only success measured by this Waldoboro dog treat company

"This is more than just selling the cookies. It means that people are looking at Landen and learning his story," his mother said.

WALDOBORO, Maine — According to the National Institute of Health, 25% of people with autism are non-verbal.

For some of these individuals, connecting with animals becomes a profound source of communication and companionship.

At the age of 2, Landen Stewart from Waldoboro exhibited signs typical of autism, such as toe walking and hand flapping.

Eventually, he was diagnosed with autism and Fragile X syndrome.

These days, Landen has found his rhythm after school, often spending his time listening to music and engaging in activities in his kitchen.

In September, Landen and his parents embarked on a venture called K9 Kookies. Landen plays an active role in crafting homemade dog treats.

“We just were brainstorming on what could Landen do, something he would be successful at and enjoy doing, where he feels like he's putting his mark on the world," Danielle Stewart, Landen's mother, said.

The journey wasn't just about creating delicious treats. It was about Landen leaving his mark on the world.

Soon after, dogs belonging to friends and family became taste-testers as Landen and his family perfected their recipes.

The treats quickly gained popularity, being sold at 10 local shops and tallying nearly 300 bags sold.

However, for the Stewarts, K9 Kookies is more than just a business venture.

It's a platform for sharing Landen's story and raising awareness about autism and Fragile X syndrome.

The proceeds from the sales have allowed them to purchase a service dog named Piper for Landen.

Piper isn't just a pet. She's a companion who bridges the communication gap for Landen.

“His communication barriers that he has, not being able to communicate, is not a problem with a dog. He will have a best friend that he doesn't have to worry about being able to talk to," Danielle said.

As long as K9 Kookies continues to bring happiness to Landen and others, the Stewarts are committed to baking more treats and sharing their journey.

Through Landen's passion and perseverance, he has not only found his voice but also a purposeful way to connect with the world around him.

In the words of Landen's mom, Danielle: "This is more than just selling the cookies. It means that people are looking at Landen and learning his story."
