Portland Rotary volunteers were eager to spread a little Christmas cheer Tuesday morning. Dozens served Meals on Wheels to home-bound citizens throughout the city.
"It’s a day to give back to other people. We have the time and we want to make other people have a great special Christmas," said volunteer Laura Young.
On the menu? Ham dinner, with sweet potato and broccoli greens. Piping hot from the oven, volunteers divvied up the meals into bags.
Atop each bag, a list of deliveries to be made.
Volunteers took their assigned bags, and drove off.
The Brenerman family spends every Christmas volunteering with Meals on Wheels in Portland.
"The people that do meals on wheels do this everyday. So it’s great to give them a break so they can spend the holidays with their families," said Molly Brenerman.
"It’s a wonderful feeling to bring joy to people. We may be the only people that they see all day. And they’re so nice , and this year with our daughter bringing her dog, it’s just given great joy," Nancy Brenerman said.
Volunteers say serving others is a reminder of what Christmas spirit is all about.
"Christmas has taken on a whole other dimension. So this is getting back to the basics. This is feeding our neighbors and our community," said Southern Maine Agency on Aging CPO Catlyn Blackstone.
