BANGOR, Maine
(NEWS CENTER) -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Empire Beauty School in Bangor is doing its part to raise money for the cause.
The cosmetology school offered haircuts, coloring and nail services all day Saturday with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to local charities that help victims of domestic violence.
Empire has been raising money all week for its "Week of Beauty" with a bake sale, a school luncheon and other events.
At the beginning of the week, Empire presented a check for over a thousand dollars to Spruce Run, a non-profit that serves people affected by domestic abuse.
"I've seen it. I've been very close to victims. I've been one myself, so that's something that has a huge soft spot for me," customer service coordinator Shawna Wheeler said. "And I think it's important to give back as much as we can. I mean it's karma. People are always talking about bad karma. Well there's good karma too. What you give out comes back to you eventually."
Empire Beauty School locations across the country are taking part in the "National Day of Beauty" to raise money for charities in their area.
