Orono, ME (NEWS CENTER) --
The University of Maine is marking 150 years of service to the state. It is the largest University in the state, has more than 100,000 living alumni and presents more than 90 percent of the state's Ph D's.
Dr. Susan Hunter became President in March of 2015 after serving as an interim since the previous July.
Hunter is a graduate of James Madison University, which was an all-woman school at the time. She went on to graduate studies at Penn State.
She came to Maine in 1986 with her professor husband, David. They raised their two children in Orono, with the bus often dropping the kids off at one office or another.
As Dr. Hunter advance from an adjunct to provost, she made thousands of relationships within the school and the state. "I think of myself as someone who leads the University from within the community, not someone who was dropped on top of it." she told NEWS CENTER.
