Destroyer heads to sea for builder's Trials

The USS Zumwalt left Bath Iron Works on Monday for Builder's Trials

BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Monday's snowy weather was no match for the first of a new class of stealth destroyers.

The USS Zumwalt left the dock at Bath Iron Works this morning for Builder's Trials. The U.S. Navy says many of the ship's key systems will be tested out including the motor and propulsion systems and boat handling. The tests are to make sure the ship is ready for its final trail in April before it is delivered.

The 600-foot ship is the largest destroyer ever built for the U.S. Navy and looks much different than previous destroyers.

The USS Zumwalt went to sea for the first time in December.

The Navy says Commissioning for the ship is scheduled for October 15, 2016.
