York's Wild Kingdom keeping animals cool during heat wave

Zoo staff were busy throughout the week helping animals cool off in the oppressively hot weather, with temps that felt like 110 degrees in York.

YORK, Maine — As the temperature climbed Thursday into what felt like 110 degrees in York, staff at York's Wild Kingdom helped its residents beat the sweltering heat.

"Typically on hot days our animals like to relax, lay down, and stay in the shade," the zoo's general manager, Samantha Sauls, said.

As the otters slept under cover, Moxy the tiger munched on chicken frozen in water, and the Schmidt’s guenons snacked on berries encased in ice.

According to Sauls, staff also changed out water regularly and hosed animals off.

"Our zookeepers, they're really on top of things," she told NEWS CENTER Maine.

She added the weather is tough on all of the zoo animals, even if their species is built for the heat.

"While some of them here are from warm climates, they've lived here in our zoo," Sauls explained. "Some of them their whole lives. So, they're used to cooler temperatures. It's a little bit different for them."

Despite the weather, the zoo had some guests and even a summer camp stop by to enjoy the animals.
