LIMINGTON, Maine — Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and this love-filled holiday is often centered around delicious extravagant foods like steak, lobster, and of course, chocolate. But have you ever considered mealworms?
Saco River Wildlife Center in Limington is giving donors a chance to name a mealworm or fish after an ex before they feed it to one of their adorable patients. Wouldn’t it warm your heart knowing the person who derailed your life is being eaten by a ravenous raccoon or a famished fox?
Center director Lauren Kennedy said this is the first year her facility is hosting this hilarious event. She said they were inspired by other rehabilitation centers in Maine that have done something similar in the past.
How does it work?
For a $10 donation, you can name a mealworm after an ex, which will be fed to one of the center's patients. For a $20 donation, you can name a fish after an ex and that tasty treat will be fed to a raccoon, while also providing much-needed enrichment skills, according to the center's Facebook page.
If naming a worm or a fish isn’t enough to help heal your heart, you can take part in the "upgraded experience." With a $100 donation, you will receive a customized video of your fish or mealworm being enjoyed by one of the wildlife patients.
I don’t know about you, but I would watch that on repeat.
Submissions
The deadline to submit a name and a donation is Feb. 12. Kennedy said the response has been fantastic so far.
"The reaction has been phenomenal. There have been lots of questions asking 'Can I name this after my mother-in-law? My old boss?' We like to emphasize that you can name your mealworm or fish after whoever you want! We encourage creativity."
Kennedy said they are hoping to raise $2,500 through the event, in time for "baby season."
Spring is approaching and that means wildlife mamas are giving birth to their babies, who unfortunately can end up injured, abandoned, or lost. Kennedy said the donations will go towards caring for those little critters.
