BRUNSWICK, Maine — Like many, you may describe your dog as your best friend.
People waited outside on Thursday morning to potentially meet their new best friend at Midcoast Humane in Brunswick.
It's adoption day for four dogs, two of them are sisters, Irish Setters Tessa and Fiona, who were previously neglected, underweight, and desperately in need of love.
"They smelled so awful, they had been laying in their own waste, and it had soaked into mats. It was just awful," Jess Townsend, executive director of Midcoast Humane said.
Tessa and Fiona's future was tied up in the courts for five months. But now, they are ready for adoption.
"The state intervening allowed us to get them what they needed, and now they will go off to new homes," Townsend said.
Clint Rankin and his family hope to take home one of the dogs.
Having already fostered and adopted one from the group, they know the importance of matching each dog to the right home.
"They are so passionate. When you're looking for an animal, they make sure animals are matched where they will thrive rather than just going to a warm body," Rankin explained. "Maybe your house is loud, you have kids, only one dog—they really ensure the best fit."
Rankin's family is ready to give a dog the extra TLC it might need.
"Being able to take care of something, someone, who may not be able to use their voice like an animal, and to provide a safe and happy place is one of the greatest things you can do," Rankin said.
Tessa and Fiona's story is a good reminder there are animals across the state that also need to be adopted.
For these adorable Irish Setter sisters, this day marks the start of a new chapter, filled with love and care, proving that every dog indeed deserves its "fur-ever home."
