STRATHAM, N.H. — The New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Saturday was taking in three separate transports of dogs and cats from shelters in other parts of the state. Typically, the rescue receives one per week.
"These three transports point to a nationwide emergency of pet overpopulation," NHSPCA Director of Development Sheila Ryan said.
The influx this weekend adds about 50 new animals to the already more than 120 living at the shelter or in foster homes. Many are there for months under protective custody, as animal cruelty cases are decided in the courts.
You can support the SPCA by donating, or by adopting one of the many animals in their care, including Brownie.
NEWS CENTER Maine met the 7-year-old Great Pyrenees this week, and she was truly a happy dog. It could be her new lease on life after a recent hip dysplasia surgery. She loves walks and people, and even smiles when she's extra excited. She can also be very vocal when trying to get your attention, or while she's likely trying to tell you, "That's the spot! Scratch right there, please!"
Through no fault of her own, Brownie finds herself at the shelter for a second time. She was adopted five years ago, but there was a medical issue in the family which had to give her back.
The SPCA said she does well with all environments: kids, other pets, loud noises, or peace. They add that because of her recent surgery, she slips on hard floors, so a little more carpet in her life would help.
If you're interested in meeting Brownie, the NHSPCA is open every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Wednesdays. You can find them at 104 Portsmouth Ave. in Stratham, New Hampshire.
