CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — After spotting a baby raccoon all by itself on the side of Route 77 in Cape Elizabeth Tuesday evening, a woman stopped her car to check on the critter.
The driver Kate Nicoll told NEWS CENTER Maine there was no mother raccoon in sight, so she scooped the baby up in a sheet and held him tight until Cape police and animal control arrived.
Animal control confirmed that the baby raccoon had been on her own for a while, was dehydrated, and covered with ticks.
She was transported to Saco River Wildlife Rehab for treatment.
Animal Control Officer Maggie Maxwell gave NEWS CENTER Maine an update Wednesday afternoon and said the little critter was doing well.
"She was doing good last night when I brought her in. She got lots of fluids and was super spunky!" Maxwell said.
