MAINE, USA — There is a lot to love about fall in Maine; sweater weather, beautiful foliage, apple picking, and pumpkin spice. The list is endless!
Even though we're only a little more than two weeks into the season, there are inevitable signs that winter is coming (click here for your Jon Snow GIF).
One of the earliest signs of winter in New England is snow atop Mount Washington, the region's highest peak. And that happened overnight, according to the Mount Washington Observatory. It shared a picture from a park supervisor on social media, showing a frosty peak.
And it's not just Mount Washington. Some of Maine's largest ski resorts are getting ready for their busy season.
Sunday River in Newry got its snow guns roaring Wednesday morning.
The resort tested its guns on Rogue Angel, Excalibur, and Lollapalooza trails, according to a press release from the ski resort. This was part of the resort's annual fall snowmaking system test.
Sunday River has not yet set an official opening season, but the team says they are ready "to go all out as soon as overnight temperatures drop between 25-30 degrees."
But for the fall lovers, let's not rush the season we're currently in.
In an email to NEWS CENTER Maine, Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley said it's still enjoying fall foliage.
The resort is hosting its homecoming weekend Friday through Sunday. It includes an art show, pumpkin carving, axe throwing, live music, and more activities.
If you want to do some leaf peeping, the next few days will be the perfect time to do so.
According to the Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry's weekly foliage report, the colors are at their peak in the Maine mountains. Meanwhile, southern and coastal parts of the state are seeing some color, but aren't quite at peak. And northern Maine is past peak.
The DACF predicts coastal and southern Maine will reach peak conditions in mid-October. The latest report was released Wednesday.
