SEBAGO LAKE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Amphicars are a brand of floating cars. They were being developed in Germany during World War II. After the war, the technology was purchased by a private company.
The Shaw Brothers, well known for their Gorham construction company, were introduced to the vehicle early.
"Our dad was buying a building, and there was a $1,500 difference over the price," mused brother Danny. "They flipped a coin with the winner getting the money and the loser getting the Amphicar. My father lost the flip, but he later figured he won because he got the Amphicar."
Amphicars are generally valued at between $35,000 to $70,000 apiece.
The California Company, which stocks parts for Amphicars, believes that the largest concentration of Amphicars in the United States is around Sebago Lake.
