Strict rules for drone flyers released by FAA

The FAA's new rules for flying drones are now in effect.  The rules for hobbyists and commercial users are the same.  It's a high barrier for hobbyists, but most are happy that they now know what the rules are.  Rules include that the person flying the drone must be able to see it with the naked eye, can fly only during the day and no higher than 400 feet off the ground.

Cape Elizabeth, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- New rules for flying drones are now in effect. They are strict, but will allow people who want to use drones commercially to get to work.

Among the rules are you cannot fly a drone over people, over private property, out of your line of sight, above 400 feet, over 100 miles an hour or at night.

Dave Deschaine is a well known contractor in Southern Maine. His motto is, "To keep out the rain call Dave Deschaine."

His unofficial motto is, "I just turned 50 and I don't need to spend any more time up on tall ladders."

So Deschaine went to the extraordinary step of getting his pilot's license so that he could fly drones. Turns out, he didn't have to. Under new rules, people over age 16 can take an aeronautical knowledge test and be qualified.

However, the rules are so strict, many hobbyists say they have no where to fly.

Deschaine is ready and has started a new company called Maine AVP. The AVP stands for aerial video photography. Deschaine has a high-def Go-Pro attached to his quadcopter.

It can give you stunning looks at the area around Two Lights or check your roof for leaks while Dave remains safe with two feet on the ground.
