Gorham, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- Shawn Moody is known statewide in Maine. In 2010, he ran as an independent for Gorvernor. His self-made story may have been overpowered by the eventual winner Paul LePage. Another independent candidate named Eliot Cutler certainly suppressed his vote total.
Moody has lived an extraordinary life. His mother struggled with mental illness and was actually committed to a mental hospital in the 1960's. Treatment for mental illness was primitive and at times barbaric. Mrs. Moody was subjected to electric shock treatments which she believes almost killed her.
The single mother of three managed to keep her family together. She came back to Maine and did the best she could with Shawn and his siblings often finding their own way. Shawn's brother Thad would help run his election campaign. His sister Kim because one of Maine's best runners.
He knew he could make a living fixing automobiles. He built his own garage at age 18 and slowly and steadily learned the business.
He also bought a junk yard and became a national leader in automobile recycling.
He sold his recycling facility to a national company and eventually began Moody's Collision Centers. In partnership with his co-workers (not employees) he has built the operation into nine locations. Each worker receives benefits each quarter as part of an Employee Stock Option Program.
Moody and his wife Chris live in Gorham. They have four grown children.
