CAMDEN, Maine — An ice boat racing across a frozen lake is not often seen in Maine. The reasons are simple. There aren't many such boats and conditions are rarely right.
This had been a great year for ice boating in Maine. The biggest group of sailors are in the Chickawaukie Ice Boat Club.
"Some years we’ll have ten weeks of ice like this and then we’ll go two year without ice," laughs Breck Holliday of New Harbor.
Participants understand. They recognize that there sport is not for the man. However, the few enjoy the opportunity to explore a frozen lake.
Because conditions are so ephemeral, it's hard to schedule major races and regattas. Sometimes an event is postponed until the following year.
