German wins 10K Biathlon Sprint, Americans slide

PYEONCHANG, KOREA (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Another German has won another Olympic Biathlon event.

Arnd Peiffer of Germany beat Michael Krcmar of Czechoslovakiawon by a narrow 4.4 seconds in the Men's 10km Sprint event early Sunday morning. The winning time was 23:38.8. Both competitors shot clean, meaning they missed no targets.

The top American in the field was Lowell Bailey who finished 33rd in a time of 24:54. The USA's Tim Burke was 47th (25:26). Leif Nordgren, who was named by coaches to take the final spot on the team was 58th (25:49). Sean Doherty of North Conway, NH was 65th (25:55).

Biathlon is the only Olympic event in which the U. S. has never medaled and today's results are considered a disappointment to the American biathlon community.

Coaches chose Nordgren over Russell Currier of Stockholm, Maine to make the start in the race. The Americans had four places in the field.

Dominic Windisch of Italy, who missed a shot from the standing position finished 7.7 seconds behind Peiffer and earned the bronze medal.
