FARMINGTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Maine has experienced some bitter weather. What better way to experience it then in a quinzhee? Snow caves evolved in all northern cultures. The quinzhee evolved in the Canadian northwest. It seems that American outdoor people discovered the word about twenty years ago because it is now frequently used.
Our instructor is Phil Poirier. Poirier is a well known artist and outdoorsman. He was one of the founders of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club. He now teaches winter camping in the University of Maine at Farmington's Outdoor Recreation and Business Administration program.
This night it got to five below in Farmington. It was windy as well. However, inside the quinzhee it remained about thirty degrees. With good sleeping bags, we were reasonably comfortable.
