ROCKLAND, Maine — A never-before-seen art exhibit is coming to the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland this spring, showcasing works of famous American visual artist Andrew Wyeth.

Beginning April 6, the museum will host "Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth," an exhibit featuring Wyeth's abstract works spanning over six decades, all made in Maine, according to the museum website.

The exhibit is a two-part exhibition with the first installment hosted at The Brandywine Museum of Art, centered on Wyeth's Pennsylvania abstractions. The Farnsworth Art Museum said there will be a fully illustrated catalog available with contributions from Wyeth Study Center staff William L. Coleman, Karen Baumgartner, and artist Eric Aho at the Rockland show.

The artist who died in 2009 at the age of 91, was well known by many for his painting "Christina's World," a woman outstretched in a meadow looking off into the distance at a cabin. Many of his works were painted in the realist style, but he once said this about his abstract works.

"My struggle is to preserve that abstract flash like something you caught out of the corner of your eye."

The show runs from April 6 to Sept. 8 at Farnsworth Art Museum, located at 16 Museum St. in Rockland.
