Falmouth movie theater re-opens in luxury style

The space had not been a movie theater for quite a few years - it had been used for Walmart storage. Now, it offers a special movie experience.

FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Flagship Cinemas in Falmouth has been closed for a few years, but reopened its doors Wednesday night.

The updated venue is not just any old movie theater. Instead, it’s now renovated with luxury accommodations. Viewers can enjoy a movie in comfortable leather electric reclining seats, and help themselves to several self-serve concession options. “It's gorgeous,” said Assistant Director of Operations Janet Oprendek. “It does not look like a movie theater...It looks like a luxury hotel.”

The new theater is still staying true to its history. Large movie posters line the walls -- movies from 1995, the year the theater originally opened.

“We are very excited. It's been a lot of work, but it's been a lot of good work,” Oprendek. “I can't tell you how many people have just slowed down driving by, peered in the windows. It's been great advertisement. They are very excited to have us and we have just been working so hard to get open as quickly as possible because we can tell how happy they are to have us here.”

The first movie of the night was a 6:50 p.m. showing of the “The Secret Life of Pets.” Some very excited middle schoolers were there to see the film and shared with NEWS CENTER their love for slushies, popcorn, and a trip to the new movie theater.
