MAINE, USA — The third weekend in March for the past 41 years marks the Maine Maple Producers Association's Maine Maple Sunday Weekend.
This year offers a challenge to sugarhouses across the state with an all-day storm on Saturday.
Scott Dunn, the president of the Maine Maple Producers Association and owner of Dunn Family Maple, said Mainers are resilient and most sugarhouses will remain open through the storm.
"This is our Super Bowl. We get to do this once a year," Dunn said. "Everyone’s been waiting for it, and we aren’t going to be deterred by a little snow. We’re Mainers. We’re pretty hearty. We can handle this stuff. Sugarmakers are ready, just take your time in getting there. It’s going to be a great weekend."
Dunn Family Maple, along with many other sugarhouses, has opted to make accommodations for the storm, like moving products inside and setting up large tents for visitors.
Dunn said he knows at least one sugarhouse closing up for the storm in the northern half of Maine, so it’s important to check with your local sugarhouse to know their plans for this weekend.
The Maine Maple Producers Association's website offers a list of houses across the state with their contact information.
If you don’t feel comfortable driving through the storm, Sunday is still an option. Dunn adds that if you can’t make it to a sugarhouse this weekend, most locations sell maple products all year long.
