ROCKPORT, Maine — The "wildly popular" Rockport Donut Festival is returning to the midcoast this summer for its second year.
The Town of Rockport announced Wednesday the sweet event is returning for two days in downtown Rockport and at the Harbor Marine Park on June 7-8. The event will feature several vendors from the midcoast and beyond, family-friendly activities, music, and more to pay homage to the town's doughnut history.
Doughnut vendors will include: School House Farm, Moody’s Diner, Ricker Hill Farm, Beth’s Farm Market, Ruckus Donuts, Old Time Donuts, The Only Doughnut, Eighty 8 Donuts, The Gluten Free Kitchen, and The Holy Donut between Friday and Saturday, the town said.
Community members are encouraged to enter a handful of races and contests including the 5K Donut Dash Fun Run and Homemade Donut Contest.
Rockport is home to the widely-attributed creator of the doughnut hole, Captain Hanson Crockett Gregory, who is commemorated on a plaque at the Nativity Lutheran Church, according to the town's website.
"It has been said that the esteemed Captain Hanson Crockett Gregory of Clam Cove, Rockport, invented the donut with a hole in the center in 1847," Rockport Town Manager Jon Duke said in the Wednesday announcement. "We are looking forward to celebrating that legacy with our neighbors - and with people from all over Maine and beyond – with an outrageous amount of fun and DONUTS!"
The event is free to the public. For more information on participating food and craft vendors and scheduled events, click here.
