Bangor (NEWS CENTER Maine) - On Monday Bangor, Maine Mayor Ben Sprague decided to make a "cold" phone call. He noticed there was a Bangor, Pennsylvania and that they were Eagles fans. With his Patriots heading to the Super Bowl to face off against Philadelphia, he decided to see if they could set a wager.
"Once we knew the teams that were in the Super Bowl, I remembered there was a Bangor, Pennsylvania. I essentially cold called her on Monday and I found her information online and said, hey I am the Mayor of Bangor, Maine. And I understand that you are the Mayor of Bangor, Pennsylvania," said Sprague. "Wouldn't it be fun to have a friendly little bet between the two Bangors since our teams are both in the Super Bowl together?"
The mayor of Bangor, Pennsylvania is Brooke Kerzner. When she received Sprague's phone call she was immediately on board.
"Yeah I don't think Ben really knew what he was getting into when he called me," said Kerzner.
If the Eagles win, Sprague will send Bangor, Pennsylvania some of Bangor, Maine's best goods. If the Patriots win, Kerzner will send of Bangor, Pennsylvania's best goods.
Some of the items Sprague will give to Bangor, Pennsylvania include whoopie pies from Governor's Restaurant, a blueberry pie from Dysarts, and some Stephen King books.
Kerzner said that items Bangor, Pennsylvania are offering include a growler of beer from Bangor Trust Berry Works, an assortment of chocolates from chocolates on Broadway, and quoit boards to the Maine's Veterans hospital. "Quoit" is their version on horseshoes.
The bet between the two Mayor's has gone national, being picked up by The New York Times and The Washington Post.
"Anything that we can do to bring positive attention to our towns," said Kerzner.
"This is fun this is competitive of course, one of the intents was to get a good positive Bangor story out there," said Sprague.
Both Sprague and Kerzner plan to watch the Super Bowl in their respective Bangors.
