PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- An old name with a completely new look.
The Maine Mariners revealed their new logo and color scheme on Wednesday, a change from the black and orange regalia that the Mariners of the 70's and 80's wore.
Designers from Maine-based company Big Room Studios say the logo is inspired by the old look, but also gives a strong, new identity to the team that will play in Portland in 2018. The blue and green colors are a nod to Maine's shoreline and forests. The logo also features a trident complete with a pine tree and a Dirigo Star inside it.
Hockey fans who came out for the big reveal had good things to say about the new look.
"I think it's fantastic," says long-time Mariners fan, George Nanos, who was wearing the old Mariners jersey to the event. "It does everything that they hoped it would do, which is encompass the whole state. They achieved that."
The team has also launched the website marinersofmaine.com, where team merchandise is now available for purchase.
