LEWISTON (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Police in Lewiston have made three arrests as part of an investigation into what they call an issue with prostitution in the city.

Lewiston police recently charged three women, all in their 30s, with engaging in prostitution: 31-year-old Karrah Knight, 35-year-old Brandi Hesketh and 35-year-old Nicole Ackerman, all from Lewiston.

The department said Thursday that it has been "addressing the issue of prostitution taking place predominantly in various inner city areas." Police said their detectives and officers have been working closely with the state District Attorney's Office and area social service advocates during the investigations.

Police said all three women have been offered a variety of social services "in hopes assisting them to make positive changes in their lives."

The department plans to continue addressing the issue, it says, by targeting those who engage in or solicit the criminal act.
