Surgery sendoff celebration for a special boy

ELLSWORTH (NEWS CENTER Maine)-- A special little boy got a pretty cool sendoff and birthday celebration at the Ellsworth Middle School Friday.

The school had a parade for Dekota Surette, an autistic boy who turned 13 years old. He is also leaving school for a few weeks to have brain surgery in Boston to help with seizures. The entire school wore his favorite color pink and made him cards to read in the hospital. Dekota’s parade went around the entire school while the birthday boy received many high 5’s and well wishes from everyone along the way.

Dekota’s Mom, Tiffany Surette, says the entire school has been so supportive. Surette said, “They Just Care. They care for Dekota’s well being and happiness and they just care. It’s amazing.” And what does it mean to the family? Surette said, “More than I could ever say.”

One of Dekota’s special education teachers, Kristy Hardison said, “We wanted to do a fundraiser, awareness event for him. So, we came up with this idea of creating a last day of school and birthday celebration for him. The more the word got out, the more people wanted to do things and it took off.”

After the parade Dekota’s class had their picture taken together.

The faculty has also started a go-fund-me page to help the family with expenses for the trip.
