RICHMOND, Maine — One person has died after the vehicle they were driving caught fire in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in the town of Richmond.
The Sagadahoc County Communications Center received several calls around 6 a.m. reporting a crash just north of Thorofare Road on Route 201 (Brunswick Road) in Richmond, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
"Further information indicated two vehicles were involved, with one vehicle on fire and the other overturned," the release stated.
Upon arrival at the scene, officials discovered the roadway blocked by a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck that was turned on its side. Another pickup truck, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, was found in a ditch fully engulfed in flames, according to the release.
Emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire, and it was determined the driver was trapped inside the Silverado.
The driver of the Silverado, Mark Judd, 20, of Richmond, died in the fire, officials said Monday in an update.
The driver of the overturned F-250, 58-year-old William Miller IV of Richmond, had minor injuries in the crash.
The preliminary investigation into the crash shows the Silverado was traveling north on Route 201 when it crossed over the center line into the path of the F-250, which attempted to evade the collision.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing and the crash is being reconstructed by the sheriff's office.
The Topsham Police Department, Maine State Police, and the Richmond police and fire departments assisted.
Route 201 in the area was shut down and traffic was detoured for about four and a half hours.
