Maine teen raps to rally students around gun control, school safety

As students across the country take part and walkouts and demand action on gun control, Robben Harris is sharing his message the only way he knows how: through music.

BREWER (NEWS CENTER Maine) – As students across the country take part in walkouts and demand action on gun control, Robben Harris is sharing his message the only way he knows how: through music.

"My parents both teach it, and they started me very young,” Harris said.

'IT'S OUR SAFETY, AND WE CAN BE IN CHARGE OF THAT': MAINE STUDENTS WALK OUT

Harris, a senior at Brewer High School, said it all started by writing some lyrics on the back of his homework in the middle of math class.

It eventually took off to become a fully-produced rap song and music video aimed at rallying students together for the National Walkout on March 14.

Harris and his friends filmed the video outside of the school, including students in support of the movement.

"To see it actually happen in a place you'd never think it would happen, it's like it's real,” Harris said. "We all just got to come together for this."

The walkout at Brewer High School was postponed due to Wednesday’s snowstorm canceling classes. Students and administrators said it will now be held on Friday.

MAINE SCHOOL WARNS STUDENTS NOT TO MARCH IN NATIONAL WALKOUT

Harris hopes the message of his song and the walkout is heard beyond his school.

"I would want kids from other states to be able to see it and be able to say, ‘Yes, that is the message that we do want to send,’” he said.

School administrators said in a statement that they support the students’ efforts. The event will be held in the school’s gym, with the goal of making kids feel safer in school.

Harris said he thinks students across the country and the state will make an impact.

"I think it will make a difference if we can follow it up, and I think it will make a difference if we can make people listen,” Harris said.

Schools across the state, including Cape Elizabeth and South Portland, also rescheduled their walkouts. For a list of postponed walkouts click here.
