5 Things to know Tuesday: Cybersecurity for Maine voters, Amazon crashes, and more

Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap: 

1. MORE CYBERSECURITY FOR MAINE VOTERS

Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap is asking for more than $3 million in federal funding to help secure the state's voter registration system. Some of the funding would also go to train municipal election officials in online security.

2. AMAZON CRASHES AND PACKAGES GET STOLEN

Customers shopping on Amazon's website for Prime Day on Monday experienced freezes and crashes as the site was overwhelmed with traffic. Prime Day continues through 1 a.m. Wednesday, and if you're expecting packages, keep an eye out. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is warning of a string of package thefts from homes in the North Yarmouth area.

3. UBER SETTLES WITH DRIVERS FOR $20 MILLION

The Federal Trade Commission is mailing out $20 million in checks to more than 80,000 Uber drivers as part of a settlement. Uber agreed to pay drivers over misleading claims about the earning potential of Uber drivers and vehicle financing costs. The average check for a driver in the settlement is about $223.

4. POLITICAL BIAS IN SOCIAL MEDIA FILTERING

Executives with Facebook, YouTube and Twitter will appear before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday to testify about the filtering practices of social media. The hearing will mainly focus on the purported lack of transparency and potential political bias in the filtering systems set by the companies.

5. "RUGRATS" RETURNS TO TV AND THE SILVER SCREEN

Nickelodeon announced Monday it is reviving the 1990s cartoon "Rugrats," which first premiered 27 years ago. Though there is no release date set for the new TV series, a movie using computer-generated animation is set to release in late 2020.
